Celebrating National Carers Week (10th – 16th June 2019) Free Events throughout Powys

Celebrating the invisible unsung heroes in our families and communities – Young and Adult Carers

National Carers Week (10th – 16th June 2019) – Free Events throughout Powys

There are over 1000 young people, and approx. 16,000 adults in Powys who are looking after a family member or friend who is ill or disabled. All around us in every community, school, place of work there are people who are looking after someone they love; the biggest, most significant thing that anyone can do for anyone else, yet it can go unrecognised and be very challenging, impacting on how Young Carers achieve at school and their life chances. From an adult Carers perspective, it can often be a struggle looking after their own health and/or juggling work.

Sophie Gibbs, a Carer from Llandrindod Wells said ‘Communities and local organisations need to know about how challenging it is to be a Carer. It can literally be life changing. I had to give up my work to support my partner. However, as a Carer, I still have dreams and aspirations and that’s really important. Never give up and just know that there is support out there and people you can talk to. Carers Week is such an important time to celebrate what Carers achieve and to connect with other Carers. I’m getting involved with the Pop Up Picnic event in Llandrindod, which we hope will build more awareness about caring.’ See attached image of Sophie with Credu Teddy.

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid Carers face and celebrate the contributions that they make to families and communities throughout Powys as well as the wider UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as Carers and access much-needed support. This month, we are inviting Carers, services and businesses in the community to come together during Carers Week and celebrate the vital contribution made by Carers in Powys.

If you look after someone or know someone who does, Credu are hosting key events to take place all over Powys throughout Carers Week 2019, celebrating the amazing contributions that Carers make in the lives of loved ones and friends.

If you look after a member of your family or a friend you matter!

You deserve to get the most out of life!

Looking after a relative or a friend who has an illness or disability can be rewarding but it can also be extremely tough.  The name many organisations attribute to this role is ‘unpaid Carer’. If you look after someone you can access a range of support in Ceredigion and from 1st April this year Gofalwyr Ceredigion Carers will be providing some of this support. This includes:

  • Proving information, advice and emotional support on an individual basis
  • Group activities including training and social opportunities
  • Help to access support to have a break from caring, including respite

Many unpaid Carers may already access Carers Support, attend a Carers group, or perhaps receive some respite; however many struggle alone and without support. If you or anybody you know would like a bit of support, whether it is to simply let off steam, get some advice or to have some short-term respite, just get in touch on 0333 014 3377 or email ceredigion@credu.cymru

Ceredigion County Council and Hywel Dda University Health Board have jointly commissioned Gofalwyr Ceredigion Carers which is a consortium made up of three highly reputable Carers Trust Network Partners; Credu Connecting Carers (who will be listening to what is important to Carers and providing information and support), Carers Trust Crossroads Sir Gar (who will provide short-term respite in the South of the county) and Carers Trust Crossroads North Wales (who will provide short-term respite in the North of the county).  These organisations are entirely devoted to supporting Carers and their families to get the most out of life, you can find out more about us at www.credu.cymru, Facebook page ‘Gofalwyr Ceredigion Carers’ or on Instagram and Twitter @GofalwyrC.

Powys Young Assessors – Young People leading the way for better School support and services

Powys Young Assessors – Young People leading the way for better School support and services

A group of Young Carers from all areas of Powys met up with representatives of the Powys Youth Forum over Half Term to train as Young Assessors. The training residential was co-produced by the Credu Young Carers Team and the Children’s Participation Officer for Powys County Council.

Credu (Young Carers) are starting a Schools project in Powys using a programme designed by Carers Trust (their Network Partner) and the Children’s Society which aims to increase awareness, identification and support for Young Carers in our Powys schools. The programme will celebrate the good work already being done in some schools by recognising it in the form of an award, and will support other schools to become more Young Carer focussed.

The programme in Wales does not have an assessing body and Credu felt the best people to assess whether schools were reaching the targets set were Young Carers themselves, and other Young People from across Powys.

The group also looked at the Assessment process for the Childrens’ Participation Standards award which encourages participation in decision making and ways forward by children and young people in schools, youth clubs and other organisations offering a service to them.

The residential was held at Elan Valley Lodge near Rhayader and the group also recorded and filmed some of the voices of the young carers which will feed into an awareness raising video for teachers and other school staff about the issues facing this marginalised group and how to support them.

‘It is a really good opportunity for me to be involved in something effective, that can help to implement change for children and young people across Powys who don’t have the ability to speak out’ said Sophie Laing, a Young Adult Carer from North Powys who attended the training.Powys Young Assessors - Young People leading the way for better School support and services
